there are some parallels one can draw between those ridiculous Hanbalis sh. hamza referred to and those who claim to be Hanbali today:

this is a real interesting thread.

i would like to know if you have any information on ibn `abd al-barr. i know he was accused and condemned for tashbih and tajsim by ibn jahbal al-shafi`i as well as qadi abu bakr ibn al-`arabi raHimahullah (i believe).

Salamun 'Alaykum

As far as I know, Ibn 'abd al-barr was never on the Hanbali methodology, nor the Athaari creed, as he has been reported to be an Ash'ari and a Maliki. I do not know much about him to say anything. However maybe this article may help:

http://www.sunnah.org/history/Schola...bd_al_barr.htm

I just may have thought that there could be some confusion as to the Athaari madh-hab.

In which the Wahhabis have hi-jacked, misunderstood the principles and the safeguards within the creed, and raped and re-defined the terminologies. As they usually do with anything they touch.

Maybe in a 100 years [if-ingly] they will try to pose as Barelwis and attribute a totally different creed to him, who knows.
