many of our brothers will be going to visit the habib sallAllahu 'alaihi wasallam soon. from this (http://www.sunniport.com/masabih/showthread.php?t=3807) thread:To visit RasulAllah sallAllahu 'alaihi wasallam is near to being Wajib. Many people dressed in the guise of friends scare one by saying there is danger on the way, there is illness. Beware! Do not listen to anyone and never return deprived. Your life has to end one day anyway. What could be better than losing your life in his way? And it is has been seen that whosoever clings to the Prophet sallAllahu 'alaihi wasallam, he keeps them in his protection. WalHamdulillah. alaHazrat says:garmi hai, tap hai, dard hai, kulfat safar ki hai
naa shukr ye to dekh azeemat kidhar ki hai

hum ko to apne saaye meiN aaraam hee se laaye
heele bahaane waaloN ko ye raah dar ki hai

Theri jaaliyon ke neechay, theri rehmaton ke saaye.
Jisse dekhni ho jannat, wo Medinah dekh aaye.

Assalaatu wassalamu alaika Ya Rasulallah, Assalaatu wassalamu alaika Ya Habiballah!

i was thinking about this issue and i believe that this applied more in alaHazrat's time and less so now. the difficulties of travel are far less than back in the day. i don't know how people early last century travelled from makka sharif to madina sharif but now we have air conditioned coaches.

the aspect that remains, though, is that of the ill. there are about 3 million hujjaj. from them, many thousands fall ill in makka sharif and people will dissaude them from the journey. the advice is more applicable to them than to those who won't go due to the actual journey that is over 200 miles.

actually, the dissuasion has changed from the travel angle to the wahabi wolves angle who cannot swallow the blessings of the beloved sallAllahu 'alaihi wasallam.

zikr roke, fazl kaate, naqs ka joyaaN rakhe
phir kahe mardak ke hooN ummat rasulAllah ki

Like the man who ripped out all his teeth all because he did not know which tooth the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wasallam lost, so he took them all out in love for the Prophets sal Allahu alyhi wasallam. (negative wobble - yeh but thats haram) - answer So is drinking urine and blood , but blessed are the Sahaabah that drank the urine and blood of the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wasallam without being asked to do so. Were they not garanteed protection from the hell fire by the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wasallam himself! They sure was.. visiting Rasulullah sal Allahu alayhi wasallam at any cost is a must, happy to ignore the dangers. Not forgetting Bilal was commanded to go and see the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wasallam through a dream.

tayba na sahi afzal makka hi baRa zaahid
hum ishq ke bande haiN kyuN baat baRhaayi hai

another one for our hujjaj.

makka is where the beloved mustafa sallAllahu 'alaihi wasallam was born and madina is both where he passed away and where he will be till the final day.

for us sunnis, there is no problem whether makka or madina is considered afzal. we have no qualms with anyone who argues either way. they both have their own nisbat with sayyidina rasulAllah sallAllahu 'alaihi wasallam and they are beloved to us.

at another place, alaHazrat talks about the hajar e aswad thusly:

hajar e aswad ka'ba e jaan o dil
ya'ni muhr e nubuwat pe lakhoN salam

here, he has described the seal of prophethood to be the black stone and the ka'ba of our hearts and lives.

Haajiyo aao shahenshah ka rawzah dekho!
Kaaba tau dekh chuke, ab Kaabay ka Kaaba dekho!

For me Madina being afzal is a non-sequitur it is so obvious!
